Can I Choose My Doctor If I'm Hurt at Work?

Legal

Some people think that getting injured at work means you have to use the doctor picked by the workers' compensation insurance company. Thankfully, that is not the case. In Mississippi, you may select your own doctor if you wish.

Under Mississippi law, the injured worker has the right to select one physician or medical provider of his or her choosing to render treatment. That doctor can then refer the injured worker out to a different physician who specialized in another field of medicine. For example, an orthopedic surgeon can refer the injured worker to a pain management specialist or a neurosurgeon. This one referral may be done without the insurance company's approval. The worker is also entitled to mileage reimbursement for trips to and from the doctor.
